Mario Dedivanovic or as many like to call @makeupbymario is the legendary makeup artist behind Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, and Chanel Iman to name a few. Not only did he bring the art of contouring to a whole new level, but he’s also the mastermind behind the sandbagging technique and many other signature tricks that are taking over beauty these days. A few weeks ago I had the honor of attending Mario Dedivanovic’s Master Class in LA and my blogger babe @tenipanosian was his live model…couldn’t get any better than that!! I got so into the class I didn’t even post much in Stories (lol sorry guys!!) but I tried my best to take notes of everything he said and finally put them together in a blog post for you! Today I’m sharing the top tricks, secrets and product recommendations I learned from Mario’s Master Class that may just change your whole beauty routine.
Trick #1: Use a peach concealer for under-eye circles
Concealing your under eyes is one of the best tricks to looking more awake and radiant despite how much sleep you got the night before. It’s important to remember that concealer is used to correct pigmentation rather than illuminate. They key to getting rid of pigmentation under your eyes is using a peach-colored corrector before applying your concealer. I know it may sound a bit intimidating, but the peach tone neutralizes blue and purple shadows and acts as a base for your concealer. Then follow-up with a concealer that’s about half-tone lighter than your skin so it blends into the rest of your face nicely. A common mistake made with concealer is only applying it to the area that has pigmentation which can actually accentuate your dark circles instead of concealing them. Make sure to apply your concealer in a triangular shape, then blend it outwards with your fingertips and or/ beauty blender for a flawless finish. My favorite has been the Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector, a little goes a long way and the creamy formula creates a really smooth finish in preparation for your concealer.

Trick #2: Less Foundation, More Concealer
If you want that glowy, natural skin finish that you constantly see on Kim and Chrissy, then this is an important trick you’ll want to incorporate into your glam routine! Mario always applies concealer before foundation and never puts foundation under the eyes. If you want that perfect “less is more” look..I would listen. The main point to applying concealer before foundation is to conceal the areas that you would normally do with a foundation. If you dab on a bit of concealer onto your blemishes, you will find yourself applying a lighter layer of foundation rather than piling it on and risking a cakey-finish. Mario and Kim also swear by the beauty blender which is a long-time cult favorite among the pros. His secret trick is to always have a bit of leftover product on the beauty blender because it softens the look of any lines when blending and gives you that luminous, dewy finish.

Trick #3: Mix Caviar Sticks with metallic lipgloss for glossy eyeshadow
This was one of my favorite tricks I learned from the class! For those of you who follow my blog regularly, you know I’m obsessed with Laura Mercier’s Caviar sticks!! For a girl on-the-go, they are perfect for a quick and easy long-lasting cream shadow that will stay put all day long! My favorite shades are Rose Gold which is a pretty rose gold shimmer and Moonlight, a metallic champagne shimmer. I’m all about a subtle cream shimmer on the eyes, but sometimes I want to switch it up without using too many products! Mario demonstrated exactly how we can all accomplish this glossy lid look, and his technique may surprise you! First he started by taking the pigment from the Laura Mercier Caviar stick and applying it to the lid using his fingertips. Then he covered the lid with a thin layer of a clear gloss, gently applying it in the centre of the eyelid rather than the crease. I would use MACs Clear Lip Glass or Glossier’s Balm Dotcom, a lightweight lip balm that can also be used as a gloss. So there you go! A really simple trick that will give you those glossy, wet looking lids that we all lust over!

Trick #4: Sweat Effect Translucent Jelly
Mario credits Kim Kardashian’s signature dewy look to one holy grail item that he refers to as his “little secret”. And it’s actually more affordable than we thought. The one product you need to achieve that perfectly dewy face is Sweat Effect Transparent Jelly by Kryolan. This product is used on TV and film sets to create the look of sweat..so you know it really works! But be very careful when applying this product because you don’t want to overdo it and look like walking around in 100 degree weather all day! Mario demonstrated this look by applying highlighter to the high points of the face and then using a Beauty Blender to lightly pat the formula into those areas. He finished off the look with a dewy skin mist that is preferably silicone-based. The end result? A beautiful glow-from-within that looks as natural as can be. He explained the jelly formula accentuates the shimmer in the highlighter and makes it look like it’s melted into your skin rather than resting on the surface which is a common mistake we make. The other secret product to Kim’s natural glow is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream which is similar to the translucent jelly, but gives off a more “expensive glow” like Mario says.

Trick #5: Layering Is Key
(Image Source: KKW Beauty & Pinterest)
Throughout the class, Mario repeatedly said he “rarely ever uses one shade, its always multiple shades.” Believe it or not, the key to achieving that perfect Kim K nude is mixing not 2..but 10 different shades!! Not exactly what you call effortless, but hey whatever gets you that perfect pout right?! He explained getting the perfect nude really depends on your skin tone, he usually goes for a more peachy nude. Last week I put this trick into action when I did my ombre lip using 3 different lip shades which is my starting point. Just a few more tries and I’ll be mixing 10 lip shades like a pro ;) If you’re new to this, make sure you spend a bit of time playing around with different shades and seeing how they work with your skintone. Mario also never uses one shade for concealer, he whips up a customized shade depending on your skin tone. Most concealers have a pink or yellow undertone, but rarely have a balance that matches your skin tone and undertone. It’s hard to find a concealer that matches both your undertone and skin tone. Some concealers may be too yellow or too pink in which case they should be mixed to find you the perfect balance.

More TIPS!!
6. Only put highlight or light powder under the centre of eyebrow, not all the way across to avoid a dated look
7. When applying foundation and contour on the cheeks, always brush in an upwards motion rather than downwards. It creates a natural-looking finish and lifts your skin at the same time
8. You don’t need to use primers for your face. Mario urges the use of moisturizers before applying your foundation, he says it creates the most natural looking finish otherwise the foundation will sit on top of your primer rather than becoming one with your skin. He especially notes that powders will stick on to the moisturizer and look more natural on the skin
9. His secret technique to washes his brushes is using baby shampoo with a few drops of tea tree oil. The tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant and is more gentle than a lot of the harsh chemicals put into brush cleaner solution
10. Always apply cream eyeshadow as a base, it will make your eye makeup stay in place all day and night. Then apply powder shadow to intensify the look
11. Mario always uses a beauty blender that contains a bit of product when blending out foundation or contour
12. The “baking” technique doesn’t need to be done for longer than 20-30 seconds
13. When it comes to brows, Mario focuses on the outer corners first. He fills the outer corners with a darker color and goes lighter as he moves inwards because dark and heavy brows tend to look more masculine and heavy. So yes, we’re over the “Instagram Brow”
